Archicad gives users the ability to create great architecture and increase productivity. From day one, Archicad has been designed by architects for architects, and over the years it has gradually become more and more refined to allow its users to better:

* Focus on design,
* Manage change,
* Evaluate design alternatives,
* Collaborate,
* Coordinate.

Archicad® offers a different approach to your workflow process, which gives you more control over your design, while maintaining accuracy and efficiency in documentation. While you raise walls, lay floors, add doors and windows, build stairs and construct roofs this Building Information Authoring Tool creates a central database of 3D model data. From this you can extract all the information needed to completely describe your design - complete plans, sections and elevations, architectural and construction details, Bills of Quantities window/door/finish schedules, renderings, animations and virtual reality scenes. That means while you're designing, Archicad is creating all the project documentation so there's little repetitive and tedious drafting work. And unlike designing in 2D software, the Virtual BuildingTM approach also means that you can make changes at any time maintaining the integrity of your documents, without risking costly errors or costing you productivity.
The most comprehensive architectural tool available

The Virtual BuildingTM approach gives you the competitive edge today while integrating your work into the Building Information solution. With Archicad you can quickly and easily access just the right representation of the building for each design phase, and for all of the different partners involved in the project. All your documents are just a click or two away. Your client can see not only the functional arrangement and the site plan, but also how it feels to walk through the space, or how sunlight affects a particular room at different times of the day.
Consultants can receive the building data in electronic format, regardless of which CAD platform they are on, make changes and return the file to you for further work without any loss of the Virtual BuildingTM data in the process. Comprehensive schedules and bills of materials are available for builders and sub-contractors, as well as drawings of scale-sensitive details. Builders can plan tasks, create time-based animations and document any phase of a building's construction or demolition. And developers can use the photo-realistic renderings for a sales brochure.

The best news: these documents are created while you design, and remain up-to-date as you proceed.
Highlights of Archicad

* The Virtual BuildingTM: Archicad stores all the information about the building in a central database; changes made in one view are updated in all others, including floor plans, sections/elevations, 3D models and bills of material
* Intelligent Objects: Archicad's intelligent building elements like doors, windows, and columns understand and react to their environment. This accelerates work, makes the management of the project easier and allows you to design instead of draft. Even working from drafted lines, arcs and splines, the Magic Wand can create intelligent building elements.
* The ability to think and work 'live' in 3D: You can design and edit the model in 3D view, navigate in real time to check the design, and hold interactive design sessions with clients.
* Instant visualization: Archicad's rendering tools are simple to use; no expert knowledge is required to product stunning results. VR presentations and animations and can be generated directly in Archicad.
* Efficient documentation: Construction documents and files can be derived automatically from the Virtual Building model. The interactive element schedules and Bills of Material can be quickly generated and always reflect the current state of the building model. Dimensions are both automatic and associative. Automatic labeling and enhanced Detail Tools ease tedious drafting work.
* Hassle-free layouting: The Layout Book lets you layout material from different sources with the freedom of using a variety of plotters and printers. Automatic page numbering and master pages save you time and the direct connection ensures document integrity - all changes to the Virtual Building are automatically updated on the layout.
* Clear communication: Archicad's TeamWork makes sharing your project with colleagues easy. Distribute documents to clients and consultants in several CAD standard formats or use the Web for review and mark-up. Changes can be easily merged back into the project.

CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel Corporation of Ottawa, Canada. It is also the name of Corel's Graphics Suite. Its latest version, named X3 (actually version 13), was released in January 2006.

Supported platforms

CorelDRAW was originally developed for Microsoft Windows and currently runs only on Windows. The current version is X3 (actually version 13), released in January 2006.

Versions for Macintosh (Mac OS Classic and Mac OS X) and Linux were at one time available, but these are now discontinued. The last version for Linux was version 9, released in 2000. The last version for Macintosh was version 11, released in 2001.

Also, up until version 5, CorelDraw was developed for OS/2.

Development history

In 1985, Dr. Michael Cowpland founded Corel to sell Intel-based desktop publishing systems.

In 1987, Corel hired software engineers Michel Bouillon and Pat Beirne to develop a vector-based illustration program to bundle with these desktop publishing systems. That program, CorelDRAW, was initially released in 1989. The program was well received, and Corel soon focused on software alone.

CorelDRAW came into its own with Microsoft's release of Windows 3.1. The inclusion of TrueType in Windows 3.1 transformed CorelDRAW into a serious illustration program capable of quality typography.

Characteristic features

Several innovations to vector-based illustration originated with CorelDRAW: a node-edit tool that operates differently on different objects, fit text-to-path, stroke-before-fill, quick fill/stroke color selection palettes, perspective projections, mesh fills and complex gradient fills.[citation needed]

CorelDRAW differentiates itself from its competitors in a number of ways. The first is its positioning as a graphics suite, rather than just a vector graphics program. Second, the package consistently includes a large collection of fonts and clip art. The biggest improvement with CorelDRAW over other graphic software programs is its ability to edit bitmaps. A full range of editing tools allow the user to adjust contrast, color balance, change the format from RGB to CMYK, add special effects such as Vignettes and special borders to bitmaps. Bitmaps can also be edited more extensively using Corel PhotoPaint, opening the bitmap directly from CorelDRAW and returning to the program after saving.

CorelDRAW's chief competitor is Adobe Illustrator. Although they are both vector-based illustration programs, the user experience differs greatly between the two. For instance, CorelDRAW can work with multi-page documents directly; Illustrator only offers a single-page layout view, but it will allow you to divide that large layout in the print options so that it prints on multiple pages. While Illustrator will read CorelDRAW's native file type and vice versa, the translation is almost never perfect. CorelDRAW can open Adobe PDF files: Adobe PageMaker and InDesign, Microsoft Publisher and Word, and several other programs can print documents to PDF using the Adobe PDFWriter printer driver, which CorelDRAW can then open and edit every aspect of the original layout and design. CorelDRAW can also open PowerPoint Presentations with little or no problems.

Corel World Design Contest

The annual Corel World Design Contest ran from 1990 through 1998 and was considered to be the most prestigious graphic design contests, world wide. The competition intended to recognize and encourage an international community of graphic artists, from over 50,000,000 registered Corel Users. Two finalists for each of the eight categories were awarded a trip to Ottawa, Canada to participate in Corel World Design Contest gala and awards ceremony. The finalists from each of the eight categories received an issue of the "Corel Crystal Award".

The “Corel Crystal Award” was designed and produced by Gregori A. Robinson.

Gregori Robinson is best known for his innovative multi-media installations in the style of Art Nouveau. His Studio/Gallery is located at Studio 55, 55 King Street, Delta, 613 267 6794. [1]

Over time, additional components were developed or acquired and bundled with CorelDRAW. The list of bundled packages usually changes somewhat from one release to the next. There are several mainstays that have remained in the package for many releases now, however: PowerTRACE (a bitmap to vector graphic converter), PHOTO-PAINT (a bitmap graphic editor), and CAPTURE (a screen capture utility).

The current version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, X3 (actually version 13), contains the following packages:

* CorelDRAW: Vector graphics editing software

* Corel PHOTO-PAINT: Raster image creation and editing software

* Corel CAPTURE: Enables several methods of image-capture

* Corel PowerTRACE: Converts raster images to vector graphics.

* Pixmantec RawShooter essentials: Support for RAW file format

Corel Corporation also offers the popular Corel Painter line of graphics software.
